Serving as an Episcopal bishop in a swing state means that I know there are some members of my flock who are happy at the results of yesterday’s election, and to those who are in that category, I ask for your support and compassion and prayers for those who woke up this morning feeling frightened or lost.
Jesus always shows the most compassion for those who are suffering. So for that group of people who are suffering today, I offer a word that I hope is comforting. Today I find myself turning to Jesus-not in denial, or as a substitute for action; but as the source of our healing, as the one who guides us in the way of love, and as the unchanging rock of faith that has guided and sustained his followers through seasons of war and violence as well as seasons of joy and prosperity. Jesus will sustain you. And we will work as the body of Christ in the world to sustain all those who weep today.
An ancient prayer over the Paschal candle–the Easter candle–the candle that begins our journey from the cross to resurrection has been ringing in my ears this morning:
Christ yesterday and today
the Beginning and the End
the Alpha
and the Omega
All time belongs to him
and all the ages
To him be glory and power
through every age and for ever. Amen.
By his holy and glorious wounds, may Christ the Lord guard us and protect us. Amen.
