Election of Secretary to Convention
Shall be elected for a term of one year and shall be Secretary of the Diocesan Council. Duties include: giving notice of all meetings of the Convention and the Council; preparing a list of clerical members and lay delegates and alternates prior to the opening of Convention; acting as recording secretary for every meeting of the Convention and the Council; preserving the records of the Convention; preparing and distributing the annual journal; performing such duties as assigned by the Bishop, the Convention or the Council.
[Incumbent Mrs. Janet L. Feltz is seeking re-election.]
Election of Standing Committee: [Electing 3 members]
The Standing Committee consists of three priests and three lay communicants who shall each serve a 3-year term and not more that two consecutive 3-year terms. The Standing Committee meets as needed. Duties include: advising the Bishop; consenting to election and consecration of bishops; recommending persons for ordination; consenting to encumbrance and disposition of property; acting as ecclesiastical authority in absence or disability of the Bishop or vacancy in the Episcopate. Election this year for: one clerical member for a 3-year term, one lay for a 3-year term, and one lay member for the remaining one year term of Ms Luisa Bonillas. [Incumbents, The Rev. Frank Bergen and Mr. Russ Smith are eligible for re-election.]
Election of members of Diocesan Council: [Electing 2 members]
The Diocesan Council consists of nine members who each serve a 3-year term. Four members of Council, each of whom is a communicant in good standing, canonically resident in the Diocese, and a member of a parish or a mission current on its Diocesan assessment as determined by the Treasurer of the Diocese at the time of the election, shall be elected by The Mission Convocation. There shall be five members of the Diocesan Council elected by the Diocesan Convention. The term of office of each member shall commence at the first Diocesan Council meeting following the Diocesan Convention. Election this year for: two members for 3-year terms. [Incumbents The Rev. Michael Smith and Mr. Ed Dietrich are eligible for re-election.]
Election of Deputies to General Convention
Four clergy and four lay persons shall be elected as Deputies and four clergy and four lay persons shall be elected as Alternate Deputies. Deputies and Alternates shall have been communicants in good standing of a parish or mission of this diocese for not less than one year prior to their election. The General Convention will be July 8 - 17, 2009 in Anaheim, California.
Canon Changes
Changes will be made to assure that Diocesan Canons comply with changes made to the Constitution and Canons of The Episcopal Church at the 2006 General Convention. These changes will be discussed at the Pre-convention workshop on Friday, October 19 and voted on at Convention.

Resolutions will be discussed during the Pre-convention workshop on Friday, October 19 and voted upon during Convention.
Approval of the 2008 budget
The 2008 budget, which has been put forth, by the Finance Committee and Diocesan Council, must be approved by Convention. The budget will be discussed at the Pre-convention Workshop on Friday, October 19 and voted on at Convention.
Call for Nominations: Any member of the Clergy canonically resident or any lay communicant in good standing may submit to the Chair of the Nominating Committee no later than August 3, 2007, a completed nomination form [available on the Convention page of the Diocesan website, www.azdiocese.org , for one or more persons to fill the positions listed above. First, seek permission from the person you wish to nominate, complete the form carefully and attach a passport type photo. In addition, each candidate for election must complete the list of questions which can also be downloaded from the Convention website. Mail the nomination form and photo to:

Clergy Eligible to Vote: Canon I, Section 4(a): Every member of the Clergy who is: (1) In good standing; (2) Canonically and actually resident in the Diocese and; (3) Actively exercising a regular parochial or Diocesan ministry in the Diocese, as determined by the rector or vicar of the parish or mission in which they serve, or by the bishop; is a Clerical Member of, and shall be entitled to a seat and vote in Convention. Every other member of the Clergy who is in good standing and is canonically resident in the Diocese shall have a seat in Convention but no vote. Clergy eligible to vote will be listed with the congregation with which they have a working relationship. Non-voting clergy should be registered in the appropriate section of the registration form. Delegate/Clergy Registration: The Convention registration form will be sent by email to each congregation in July and must be returned to Diocesan House by August 10, 2007. The registration form will indicate the number of delegates, wardens and clergy eligible to voice and vote at Convention. Please complete the form and send to Kris Stone at Diocesan House by return email. If you have any problems, please contact Diocesan House for help, or we will be happy to send you a hard copy of your registration. The registration fee for each person is $43, which includes lunch on Saturday, October 20. Once you have completed your registration, please send your registration and dinner payment to Diocesan House as soon as possible. We won't be able to complete your registration until payment has been received.
Visitor Registration: Visitors are most welcome to attend all Convention events including the breakout sessions and Friday evening dinner. Visitors will have a seat but no voice or vote. Visitors can register with their congregation or by downloading the registration form on the Diocese of Arizona webpage [See above]. The registration fee and cost for the Friday evening dinner is the same for visitors. Payment for visitors must be received at Diocesan House before their registration will be complete. Please call Diocesan House with any questions or if you have any difficulties with the registration.
Breakout Sessions: Our focus is on the Millennium Development Goals which were passed as Resolution D022 this past General Convention. This year we are privileged to have The Rev. Mike Kinman, Executive Director of Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation, as our guest presenter. He will start our workshops with a plenary session on the MDGs. We then will move to small group breakouts. Several of our presenters are from outside the Diocese and bring new vision and information on their topics. On your registration form delegates and visitors are required to register in advance for the session they wish to attend. The following sessions are being offered:
- Small Church Ministry - The Rev. Suzannne Watson, Staff Officer in the Office of Congregational Development at the Episcopal Church Center, New York, with special responsibility for rural and small congregations
- State of the Anglican Communion - The Rev. Jan Nunley, Deputy for Communications for The Episcopal Church, and The Very Rev. Nicholas Knisely, Dean of Trinity Cathedral and Chair of the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Communications
- Millennium Development Goals - The Rev. Michael Kinman, Executive Director of Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation
- Emergent Church - The Rev. Dave Hahn, Chaplain for Lutheran Campus Ministry at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona
- Bishop's Forum - Bishop Kirk Stevan Smith, Bishop of Arizona
- Will Our Children Be Good Stewards? - Terry Parsons, Stewardship Officer in the Office of Congregational Development at the Episcopal Church Center, New York
Pre-Convention Workshops: There will be new pre-convention workshops this year. As part of this new format, there will be time for questions and conversation with the candidates for election to all positions in the Diocese. Each candidate will complete a list of questions for which the answers along with the candidate nomination information will be printed in the October Convention Issue of ArizonaLife. In addition, the session for Canons, Resolutions and Budget will be held during pre-convention workshop. This will allow for more focus on the Millennium Development Goals during the afternoon breakout sessions.

Hotel Accommodations: Hotel rooms at the Sheraton Crescent are $104 for either single or double occupancy. This rate is good until Sept. 19, 2007. Room availability is limited so don't wait. Register as soon as possible. You can book your room at any time before this date by phone at 602.943.8200 or online at www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/episcopal. Be sure to indicate that you are with the Diocese of Arizona to get the special rate. If you have any difficulties making a reservation, please contact Cathy Black at Diocesan House right away. There is plenty of parking and once you are there, you don't have to get in your car again. Everything is under one roof including a restaurant and lounge. There are lots of great things within walking distance: Metro Center Shopping mall is right across the street; Castles and Coaster Amusement Park is there as well [in case you need an extra thrill on the roller coasters]; lots of restaurants and easy access to I-17.
The cost of the dinner is $37 and you have a choice of vegetarian, chicken or beef entrée. There is a separate form for dinner reservations. There is limited seating for the dinner, so we recommend you get your reservations and payment in as soon as possible. Visitors and delegates are welcome to attend with spouses or guests.
Exhibits: We will be providing space for exhibitors at Convention. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The participation fee is dependent on the type of exhibit you are planning.
