E-pistle becomes V-pistle
By Bishop Kirk S. Smith
When I was at the Lambeth Conference last year, I took with me a little Flip video camera and posted a short video clip each day. I was surprised at how many of you commented on these postings. I certainly was not the only bishop blogging from England, but at the time I was apparently the only one who posted videos. Also, many of you remarked that you liked the “human interest” content of some of my posts. Others may have been sharing their in-depth wisdom about the discussions at Lambeth, but I was the only one who gave a virtual tour of the dorm facilities and their very odd bathrooms!

The 76th General Convention of The Episcopal Church is nearly upon us. Starting July 8 and ending July 17, more than a thousand deputies from around the country and from around the world will be gathered in Anaheim, Calif., (right next to Disneyland!) to transact the business of the church.

House blessings an evangelism tool
By The Rev. Canon Carmen Guerrero/Catedral de la Trinidad
The Rev. Canon Carmen Guerrero with two of the young members of Catedral de la Trinidad. Catedral de la Trinidad
Holy Week was exceptionally special for us at the noon Spanish language services at Catedral de la Trinidad (Trinity Cathedral, Phoenix). This year we celebrated Tenebrae, Washing of the Feet, Good Friday Services, and, of course, Easter Sunday in Spanish for the first time at the Cathedral. Catedral de la Trinidad is one of the many missions supported by the Alleluia Fund and your Diocesan contributions.

Time for some good news!
By Bishop Kirk S. Smith
In this time in our history where many of our parishes are feeling an economic crunch and where some of our families are out of work, and some out of their homes, I felt some good news might be an antidote to our current blues:

Cap and gown

This past week I participated in two school graduations and heard about many more. It is always a moving occasion for me to watch our young people mark this important milestone in their lives and head off to new schools and new adventures.

Summer reading list
By Bishop Kirk S. Smith
Back in my school days, teachers were concerned that we might waste all of summer vacation actually relaxing and having fun and so they created "summer reading lists" to keep us busy (come to think of it, maybe our parents had something to do with this diabolical plan...). I must admit that although I thought this was cruel and unusual punishment at the time, I do remember reading some very good books.

Choosy or Chosen?
By Bishop Kirk S. Smith
Last night Laura and I stopped into a local "gourmet grocery store" to pick up a couple of needed items. I was struck by the incredible choice of products that we now have. There is no such thing anymore as a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine, a pound of coffee, or a bottle of beer. In each of these departments there are hundreds of brands from around the world from which to choose.

Leading from in front
By Bishop Kirk S. Smith
Check the business section of any bookstore and you will find a whole shelves of guides on the topic of leadership. Many of them use an historical figure as an example of good leadership, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, even Genghis Khan!

Diocese responds to swine flu issue
By Bishop Kirk S. Smith
We are all concerned about the possible effects of the Swine Flu outbreak, no one more so than the members of the Diocesan Emergency Preparedness Committee.
They compiled this latest update on Tuesday, April 28. Two members of the group are former employees of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and are micro-biologists, so they know what they are talking about. I would especially call your attention to the last paragraph - recommendations for parishes.
